SAFE AND EFFECTIVE

Beyond DIBAL: The Next Generation of Reducing Agents

Synhydrid® delivers superior efficiency, reduced material consumption, and consistently higher yields—offering a high-performing, cost-effective alternative to DIBAL-H in reduction reactions. Its optimised reactivity and safer handling make Synhydrid® the smarter choice for achieving precise, high-yield outcomes in both laboratory and industrial applications.

CAS No. 22722-98-1

Although Synhydrid® is represented as a single substance, it is actually a consistent thermodynamic-equilibrium mixture

The chemical name for Synhydrid® is Sodium bis(2-methoxyethoxy) aluminium hydride.

Synhydrid® is available as:

  • 70% Synhydrid® (standard)

  • 60% Synhydrid®

  • Modified Synhydrid®

The product is also generically known as SDMA, Red-Al and is 70% solution in toluene.

Reduced Costs Are Not The Only Advantage

Lithium aluminium hydride (LiAlH₄) and diisobutylaluminium hydride (DIBAL-H) are both considerably more expensive per kilogram than Synhydrid®.

Yet price tells only part of the story—Synhydrid® also offers significant operational benefits. Alongside savings from the improved safety profile, it is compatible with more economical solvent options like toluene and xylenes. Lower usage volumes from higher hydridic hydrogen efficiency means less material is needed, reducing waste and overall consumption. Long shelf life under ambient dry conditions simplifies inventory management and reduces losses.

POWERFUL CONTROLLED REACTIVITY

Delivers reduction performance comparable to LAH and DIBAL—without the associated safety and handling challenges.

NON-PYROPHORIC

Synhydrid® is air-stable and non-pyrophoric, eliminating the spontaneous ignition risk. It ensures a safer working environment for labs and production sites.

EXTENDED SHELF LIFE

Stable in dry conditions with no loss of efficacy over time—supporting better stock control and reducing waste.

EASY TO HANDLE AND TRANSPORT

Supplied in liquid form, Synhydrid® can be transferred using standard pumps or inert gas pressure systems. It avoids the complex handling requirements of powder-based reductants.

BROAD SOLVENT COMPATIBILITIES

Offers excellent solubility in a wide range of solvents, including cost-effective aromatics such
as toluene and xylenes. This contrasts with the strict ether requirements of LiAlH₄.

PROVEN ACROSS INDUSTRIES

Trusted in industrial synthesis for its consistent performance and safety profile, Synhydrid®
supports scalable, reliable reductions from lab to plant.

Case Study

Example Reaction: Reduction of Acetophenone

Superior Efficiency and Yield

For the reduction of 1 kg of acetophenone, only 1.3 kg of Synhydrid® (70 wt.% solution of SDMA) is required. In contrast, performing the same reduction with DIBAL-H (25 wt.% solution) demands 4.66 kg of reagent.

Beyond the reduced material requirement, Synhydrid® also provides a higher yield of 1-phenylethanol, further demonstrating its superior performance and process efficiency.

Hydridic Hydrogen Efficiency

The molecular structure of Synhydrid® contains twice as much hydridic hydrogen as DIBAL-H. As a result, substantially less Synhydrid® is needed to achieve equivalent reduction outcomes.

To obtain one mole of hydridic hydrogen, only 144.40 grams of Synhydrid® (70% solution) are required, whereas DIBAL-H (25% solution) requires 568.84 grams to deliver the same hydrogen content.

This significant difference underscores the combined cost, material, and performance advantages that Synhydrid® brings to reduction processes—offering safer handling, higher yields, and greater efficiency in every application.
